Tree Trimming & Pruning in Illinois

Quick answer

Most shade trees in Illinois should be pruned every three to five years, and young trees every two to three years for structure. The best window is late winter through early spring while the tree is dormant. Nova Terra Tree Services prunes to ANSI A300 standards: no topping, no flush cuts, no spikes in living trees. Pruning starts at around $250 for a single small tree.

Pruning is where most tree damage in Illinois actually comes from, not storms. A tree that gets "topped" by a guy with a pickup and a pole saw responds with weak, fast, upright regrowth that fails in the next windstorm. Done properly, pruning removes deadwood, opens the canopy to light and air, corrects structure while the tree is young, and pulls weight back off limbs hanging over your roof.

What's included

  • Deadwood and hazard limb removal throughout the canopy
  • Crown thinning to reduce wind load and let light through to turf below
  • Crown raising and clearance pruning over roofs, driveways, and sidewalks
  • Structural pruning on young trees to set one strong central leader
  • Storm-damage cleanup pruning on torn and hanging limbs
  • Fruit tree and ornamental pruning
  • Cuts made at the branch collar: no stubs, no flush cuts, no topping

What drives the price

FactorWhy it matters
Tree sizeAnything the crew can reach from the ground costs a fraction of a climb in an 80-foot oak.
Canopy conditionYears of neglect means more deadwood, more cuts, and more brush to chip.
Access and drop zoneBackyard trees over a deck take longer than a front-yard tree over open lawn.
Type of pruneClearance pruning over a roofline is quicker than a full crown thinning and cleaning.
Number of treesMultiple trees on one visit are cheaper per tree than separate trips.

Questions about tree trimming & pruning

Late winter to early spring, roughly February through March, while trees are dormant. Cuts close fast, disease pressure is low, and the whole structure is visible without leaves. Exceptions: oaks should not be pruned April through July because of oak wilt, elms should be pruned in dormancy to avoid Dutch elm disease, and dead or hazardous limbs can come off any time of year.

Mature shade trees every three to five years. Young trees every two to three years, because structural cuts made early prevent expensive failures later. Fruit trees benefit from annual dormant pruning.

No. Topping, cutting the leaders back to stubs, is the single worst thing you can do to a tree. It triggers weak regrowth, opens the trunk to decay, and creates a bigger hazard within a few years. If a tree is too big for its location, we either reduce it properly using drop-crotch cuts or recommend removal and replanting.

No more than about 25% of the live canopy in one season on a healthy mature tree, and less on a stressed or older tree. Leaves are how a tree feeds itself; remove too many and you starve it.

Proper pruning removes the deadwood and over-extended limbs most likely to fail, and reduces the sail area that catches wind. It significantly lowers your risk. Nothing eliminates it, which is why we also tell you honestly when a tree is beyond pruning.

We handle clearance work around service drops to the house. High-voltage primary lines belong to the utility; we will tell you who to call and coordinate the rest of the job around it.
