Quick answer

The most common tree health problems in Illinois are emerald ash borer, oak wilt, Dutch elm disease, apple scab, anthracnose, and girdling roots from improper planting. Nova Terra Tree Services inspects trees statewide, identifies what is actually wrong, and gives you a written keep-treat-or-remove recommendation instead of a guess.

Emerald ash borer has effectively erased untreated ash from Illinois. Oak wilt moves through red oak groups underground, root to root. Bur oak blight shows up in wet summers. And a surprising share of what looks like disease is not disease at all; it is a tree planted too deep, mulched into a volcano, girdled by its own roots, or compacted under a driveway installed ten years ago. Diagnosis first, then treatment.

What's included

  • Visual tree risk assessment with written findings
  • Disease and pest identification: EAB, oak wilt, Dutch elm, anthracnose, scale, borers
  • Cabling and bracing for codominant leaders and weak unions
  • Deep root fertilization and soil decompaction for stressed trees
  • Structural pruning on young and newly planted trees
  • Construction protection plans: root zone fencing and pre-build assessment
  • Straight keep-or-remove recommendations, in writing

What drives the price

FactorWhy it matters
Number of treesA single-tree opinion is inexpensive. A full property inventory is priced per visit.
Assessment depthA visual inspection costs less than a detailed report with decay probing.
Treatment typeFertilization, cabling, and pruning are each priced separately once the diagnosis is set.
Cabling hardwareNumber of cables, hardware size, and height in the canopy.
Follow-upCabled and treated trees need periodic reinspection; we schedule it, you approve it.

No two properties price the same, which is why we quote on site instead of over the phone. The estimate is free and the number we write down is the number you pay.

Questions about tree health, cabling & disease care

Watch for canopy thinning from the top down, dead branch tips, leaves smaller or paler than last year, bark falling away in plates, mushrooms or conks at the base, sawdust or fine frass at the trunk, and suckers shooting from the root collar. One symptom is worth watching; three together is worth an inspection.

Only if it is still in good shape: a full canopy, minimal dieback, no woodpecker flecking on the trunk. Treatment with systemic insecticide works as prevention and early intervention, repeated every two to three years, essentially forever. Once an ash has lost more than about half its canopy, treatment is money down the hole, and dead ash gets brittle and dangerous fast.

A fungal disease that kills red oaks in a single season and spreads root-to-root between neighboring oaks. Management means trenching to sever root grafts, removing infected trees promptly, and never pruning oaks between April and July when the beetles that carry it are active. White oaks resist it much better than red oaks.

Only if the soil actually needs it. Most Illinois trees in lawn settings are short on root space and air, not nutrients; a compacted, over-mulched root zone is the real problem. Fertilizer on a compacted root zone is like protein powder for a broken leg. We look at the soil before recommending anything.

Steel cable or synthetic rope installed high in the canopy to support a weak union or codominant leader. Properly installed, hardware lasts years, but cabled trees need inspection every two to three years, and cabling never turns an unsafe tree into a safe one on its own.

That is exactly what a tree risk assessment is for. We evaluate the likelihood of failure, what it would hit, and the consequences, then give you a written recommendation. Sometimes the answer is pruning, sometimes cabling, sometimes removal, and sometimes it is "that tree is fine, stop worrying about it."
